Last week, our family had the incredible opportunity to attend the Top Tech competition in Indianapolis, Indiana. My husband, Paul, a dedicated technician for Cox Automotive Fleet Services specializing in heavy-duty trucks, had to take a rigorous test to qualify. As a finalist, he was among the top 1.5 percent of the company’s technicians, representing one of the 45 best in his field.
Journey to Indianapolis
We decided to drive up to Indianapolis, courtesy of Cox Automotive, who covered the rental car costs. Flying wasn't an option we were comfortable with, so the drive through North Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky offered us stunning views and a relaxing start to our trip. Our hotel was nothing short of spectacular, featuring a roll-in shower with a fold-down bench, making it perfectly accessible. The entire hotel prioritized accessibility, and the skyway to the convention center next door ensured we didn’t have to navigate busy streets.
Day 1: Arrival and Exploration
We arrived in Indianapolis around 7 PM, eager to check out our room. After settling in, we ventured out to explore a nearby park. The city’s charm was evident, and we knew we were in for an exciting week.
Day 2: Registration and Opening Ceremony
Our first official day at Top Tech began with registration and an exciting opening ceremony. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation. Tomorrow would be a big day for my husband, starting with an early morning breakfast followed by a full day of competition. Regardless of the outcome, I knew he was the best in my eyes.
Day 3: Competition Day and Pins
Paul spent the entire day competing, with only a 30-minute break from 8 AM to 4:30 PM. Meanwhile, I enjoyed a complimentary 60-minute facial at the spa, courtesy of Cox Automotive. The spa’s accessibility features, including height-adjustable tables, a pool lift, and automatic doors, made the experience truly enjoyable.
After his long day, we changed and headed to Pins, a restaurant and bar with pinball machines. We made new friends and shared stories over games and good food. Overall, a great way to wind down after a long day of competition.
Day 4: Technical Skills Training and Banquet
Today was dedicated to technical skills training and team-building activities. Paul's team, along with another team, went go-kart racing and enjoyed a fun lunch together. This was a great opportunity for Paul to bond with his peers and pick up new skills.
In the evening, we attended the banquet. It was a formal affair, and although Paul didn’t win any trophies, he found the experience enriching and is determined to improve for next year. The banquet was a celebration of everyone’s hard work and dedication.
Day 5: Traveling Home
The next morning, we packed up and embarked on our scenic drive home through Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina. The mountains were breathtaking, making the long journey home a memorable one.
Reflections and Gratitude
Now that we’re home, unpacking and settling back into our routines, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Cox Automotive. Watching my husband being recognized for his hard work and dedication was incredibly heartwarming. Their efforts to ensure I felt included and comfortable as a spouse of a competitor were greatly appreciated.
Although he didn’t win this year, I am immensely proud of Paul. His commitment to his work, his customers who continually request him, and his willingness to go above and beyond speak volumes about his character and skills. I am honored to be his wife and excited to support him as he prepares for next year’s competition.
Thank you all for your support and encouragement. We felt your love and cheers all the way in Indianapolis. Here's to another year of growth and hard work!
